David Winstanley – Biog
David first got involved in motorsport in 1969 when he marshalled as a 16 year old at Oulton Park, but a huge motorcycle accident left him lucky to escape with his life, and put him on the sidelines for several years until in 1974 he used some of the compensation to start his own racing career. Several years of moderate achievement followed, the highlight of which came at Aintree in August 1980 where he started from pole position, and led from start to finish setting a new FF2000 lap record on the way. In the same year David also established the first ever racing school at Oulton Park, and through his business Lodge Corner Agencies set about building the first ever ‘ground effects’ Formula Ford 2000 car, but a lack of suitable finance meant that it was a project which was doomed to failure and the business collapsed.
David then moved into the video industry as a promotions man, but as early as 1984 turned his hand to video camerawork, admitting that one of the highlights of his career was working at the Le Mans 24 Hour race for the first time. More camera work followed including filming Formula One and Touring Cars and then in the late 80’s David turned his hand to editing with the production of the Radio Le Mans videos, a unique collaboration which edited together the Radio Le Mans commentary and the television pictures filmed live at the circuit by the host broadcasters. This series ran from 1988 – 1993 when the additional coverage given to the race by satellite television made that video series uneconomical. Interestingly ITV Formula One commentators James Allen and Martin Brundle both made their commentary debuts on videos produced by David.
In 1993 David started rallying, in the Ford backed RS2000 series and competed on the 1994 and 1995 Network Q RAC Rally in a Nissan Sunny 2.0 Gti. David continues to compete and more details of that can be seen here!!!!!
From then on, David produced some of the best known videos ever seen on the video market, with his ‘The Story of’ series … which included the Mk1 Escort, the Metro 6R4, proving amongst the most popular and his educational programmes such as How to Prepare a Single Seater for Motorsport Start Rallying and How To Be A Top Co Driver being purchased in their thousands by motorsport enthusiasts.
The mid 90’s saw the production of 50 monthly issues of Acceleration The Rally Video, before the natural progression onto television with The Rally Show of which 44 programmes were shown from mid 1997- to early 1998
Davids other hobbies are golf, and music.
